TUTTI is an exhibition of portraits realized by Carlo Gloria from 2008 to 2010. Therefore it belongs to figurative art, whose meaning and value have been trivialized in modern times, due to the invention and spread of photography (and this in spite of many photographers, with the portraiture, have been able to create a new real art). The observation is not accidental, because it is exactly on the border between painting and photography that the work of Carlo Gloria fits. In fact, the works exposed are, in most cases, oil paintings on photographic basis: the starting point is the digital photography, but the point of arrival is necessarily based on a “manual” intervention of the artist with oil painting and/or with sewing. Obviously they are no longer kings and queens, generals or prelates to be portrayed, but ordinary and contemporary men, which are real for reality and not for royalty. The result is a "living catalog" in which the artist does not search the individual subject, but the human type to which the subject may look like, with a purpose of classification that can turn any individualism. The subjects are shapes whose details are lost in the chromatic shades. The central theme of Carlo Gloria’s research is the shadow, the undefined, the indistinct. He said: "These portraits should just look like, not be identical. The game consists in it: someone will recognize himself in the portrait of someone else and he will understand to look like other people. In this way a mental work started: the discovery - against any individualism - that we are universally alike”. The subjects of the works stay motionless into the white limbo of the background and we lose ourselves in this dreamy atmosphere, in an absolute quiet, dominated by a sense of task, but never lonely. We try to guess the exact traits of the faces, the correct poses, the forms of bodies and of clothes. This indefinite world marks the distance with that kind of portraits which the modern world puts us constantly and unconsciously in touch with, in every moment of the day. "Shadow portraits” of Carlo Gloria are light years away from the world of advertising, newspapers and posters (and also from the schizophrenic world of the web), but they are also very far from satisfying the embedded "necessity" of the portrait: the desire and ambition of one who is portrayed to hand down to descendants his own image, as a proof of his existence.
However, what Carlo Gloria wants to communicate here, is an image soft, delicate, blurred and, therefore, universal.
